Hi all,
I am new to the forum and wondered if anyone could give me some advise please. I was diagnosed with occular MG a year ago, during the year it has become more generalized. I take 60mg x 4 a day, like most I have good and bad days.
I am going on holiday in August for 2 weeks to Greece and have been quoted for insurance, as soon as I mention mg the cost doubles, from experience would you advise I inform them of the mg or not bother. Thanks

Greece in August is likely to be HOT. It could make your MG worse!
In any case not declaring a medical condition would probably invalidate your insurance if you had to make a claim for any reason.
Try SAGA (even if you are under 50).
They have never refused me.

I can endorse what Levitas has already said, SAGA are very good and very reasonable rates also, and you don't have to be over 50, ask for the pre existing medical insurance department and they will give you a quote, I used them last year and the policy does actually show it in black and white what medical conditions you have. The only problem you may encounter is that you have to have single trip cover instead of annual cover, but you must be insured.

It is essential that you inform any insurer of any pre existing medical condition, if you should have to make a claim and you haven't revealed your MG it will most definitely invalidate your insurance, it isn't worth it not to tell them. All travel insurance will be more costly if you have any pre existing medical condition.

I did find Greece too difficult to cope with with MG. It's the fluctuation between daytime and evening temperatures which was too much for me to deal with.
Hope you fare better.

I just booked my hol insurance through Saga (I am over 50) - £26 for 2 weeks in Corfu in August, which I thought wasn't too bad.

When I told the insurers who run the 'free' travel insurance provided by my Bank about my MG they immediately sent a revised schedule stating than any medical claims related to MG would NOT be paid. Don't you just love bankers?

Hi there,
just to let you know, I tried Saga, they can't insure as one of the insured must be over the age of 50.

Rob, I insured last year with SAGA and it was £50 for both myself and my hubby(both of us over 50) for two weeks in Majorca in September which was reasonable. I wonder if you use the same bank as us, I too was told exactly the same about the MG and the free holiday insurance, there's always a catch somewhere.

Jon, that is a shame, I think someone mentioned on here a while ago that TESCO were also very good, it's worth a try.

Thank you very much for all your replies, it's very re-assuring to know there is help and advice here.
Just to let you know that on the holiday insurance front, Marks and Spencers are coming out the cheapest, their the only company so far that has recognised mg on their medical condition section.

Hi, I'm with Barclays Advance and when I rang to inform them that I had MG, as I had not been hospitalised, it did not affect my policy and they have covered my condition. On another note, I did the same with my car insurance. I am with direct line and they informed me that as long as the DVLA allowed me to drive, there was no problem with my car insurance.
Hope you have a good holiday.

Hi Rob,
myself and the better half bank with Allience and Leicester and they give us free annual holiday insurance. They've done this for a good few years now,and when i declare my MG they charge an extra premium of £30 which is the most i've ever paid, but remember it's for 12months cover not just 2 weeks.I think it's excellent value.Willegfar

Willegofar,

We're with Lloyds/TSB and they just didn't want to know about covering me of anything MG-related. I'm still covered for anything else (such as accidental loss/missing luggage etc) but they won't cover any claim that's related to my MG.

I'm happy enough with my Saga cover - they would have given me 12 month European-wide cover for just under £70. I wish I could afford the holidays to take that offer up!

Rob

Tesco definitely came up trumps for me, MG was on their list of 'insurable diseases' and I have an annual worldwide policy at a very reasonable price

No insurance advice, i'm just coming to terms with the idea that heat is a problem. I live in the US. Summers are hot. Very hot.

SanddancerUSA,

Everyone is different, especially where MG symptoms are concerned. Personally, I'm not affected by heat - in fact my eyes often feel better in bright sunshine than they do on bright cloudy days with lots of reflected light.

I always wear sunglasses when out and about even when the sun isn't shining brightly.

Rob
