Neurology appointment today

Hi,

I went for my second visit to see my neurologist today after seeing him about 6 weeks ago.He had said at my last appointment that yes he did think I had MG,I had quite a few symptoms and he did some strength tests and seen how my eyes are affected.I had blood taken back then and it was sent to Oxford for testing.
Today I went back and first I seen another consultant who was working with him,I told her that the last few weeks have got worse regarding my double vision, closing of eye, breathing just everything seems to be worse. She also did some sytength tests, did the eye tests twice and also made me count to 30.She seen how my speech became affected in such a short period of time ,becoming a little slurred and sounding like I had a cold. She also said that I did have the drooping of the eyes.
Apparently my blood tests have came back negative. She spoke to my neurologist and he came in to see me.They decided not to start me on the mestinon and also mentioned not wanting to start steriods at the moment. They know things have got worse for me but have decided to send me for a nerve conductivity test and I also had more blood taken today again.I have been told they want to be sure that nothing else is going on although he seemed sure it was MG I had last month. All the symptoms add up.Im glad of course that I do not have to take the meds but the double vision, breathing, choking and feeling so weak are really getting to me and I just want to be helped.
I know that some peoples tests do come back negative so they can`t rule MG out they just want to be sure before starting meds.I will see him again in 2 mths and in the mean time will hopefully have the other test done. Can anyone tell me what its like ,it was explained that i`m to have needles placed in different muscles,is it painful? How acurate is it.Sorry to ask questions and I know its a long post ,its just been a really long day.

Thankyou

Alx

Hi Alx,

I have had this test done on numerous occasions and NO it is not painful, unconfortable but NOT painful, you will look a bit like Frankenstines Monster. The wierdest bit is when they pass a small electrical current through the needles to your muscles, they do there own body popping routine !!

Good Luck

Aix,
This has cropped up several times in the past. If you search the Forum for EMG you will find answers and read of the experiences of others.
I will just add that the tests are best done by an experienced operator and at Oxford you will get the very best. I’ve had been tested twice – the last at Oxford (SFEMG), and an earlier nerve conduction test elsewhere.

Hi Sandra

Sorry to hear no medication yet but I'd take it as a good sign, must not feel its necessary yet and the longer you can stay off medication the better. Don't worry about blood test mine are still negative after 9 months.

Don't know about the needle test - haven't had it - but everything I read confirms what the others say its more uncomfortable than painful.

Take care and talk soon, Shona says hello we were talking yesterday and mentioned you.

Hi everyone,

Thankyou for all your replies,Thanks purple dido you have put my mind at rest.I have been reading about the tests and it says how you may feel sore or bruised for a few days afterwards.Just the thought of the needles in the muscles doesn`t sound great, but if it helps thats ok.Levitas,i`m afraid I won`t be having the test done in Oxford, althought my bloods were sent there I am in Northern Ireland.Hopefully they will be able to find out more about whats happening.Derek,I ddn`t realise that your bloods were also negative, although I don`t really want to go on anymore medication,I feel that my symptoms are not going to get any better without some help.I have so many of the symptoms yet feel that as time goes by I will just continue downhill without any help. Was nice of yourself and Shona to have thought about me when you were talking, its nice to know the support is there,so thankyou both.I will continue to keep in touch with the forum and hopefully get some kind of result in the near future.I hope you are al doing reasonably well at the moment.

Take care

Alx
