Whenever I drink a glass of red wine, I feel like my MG is adversely affected. Is this common? I also am curious about why heat affects us the way it does - causing shortness of breath and weakness. I have put on a lot weight since being diagnosed in about 7 months ago. Most of the weight is in my middle. Is this common? Thanks so much for taking the time to comment.

I find I have to be pretty careful with alcohol. Alcohol does suppress breathing a little, so if your breathing muscles are affected then the alcohol will exacerbate this. Is it specifically red wine or does any alcohol seem to have this effect? John ---------- Dublin, Ireland

I only drink red wine, so I am not sure. Perhaps I am allergic to the molds or sulfites. I began drinking one glass a day to reduce stress. It was at that time that I was diagnosed with MG. I wonder if there is a connection.

Bogart, I suspect it is the alcohol -- though I have one friend with ME that says white wine is ok for her but not red. Would be worth trying some other form of alcohol (eg beer, white wine) and see how that goes just for the experiment. I very much doubt there is any connection with red wine and the onset of MG -- but like I said, alcohol does tend to surpress breathing a little. Having said that, I like a glass of red wine + when I'm feeling good it usually doesn't affect me too much. John ---------- Dublin, Ireland

Hi Bogart. I had to give up all alcohol even before I was officially diagnosed with MG. I just can’t take it any more. Even a small quantity seems to worsen all my symptoms and put me into a stupor. Keith

I use to drink a glass of red wine every night after work. Since I developed the MG. I stopped. I asked the Neurologist about having a glass and he said a 4 ounce glass twice a week would be ok. He did not want to deprive me of it. I had the 4 ounce glass and my entire face seemed like it was distorted. I could only talk with a slurred speech. My face and neck felt like it was on fire. I figured it really was not worth it so I have not had any since. Fran60

Bogart, I love a drink of wine over the weekend, but i do on occasions go very blotchy and feel as if i am a little short of breath, so i have to be very careful, this dosent allways happen. When i was first diagnosed and started on the mestinon it happened, i tried white wine, red wine, and it made no differance. Karen

Hi I live in Spain where drinking alcohol is a normal way of life! I've been having treatment for MG for about 18 months now and had no problem with a glass of wine or a cold beer until recently when I started taking azathioprine as well as Mestinon and prednisone. Now I have had to cut out any form of alcohol from my diet. Even the smallest quantity makes me feel really terrible; the best way I can describe it is like an allergic reaction or the onset of flu: thick head, heavy eyes and a cold sweat. I'm going to mention it to my neurologist next visit in a couple of weeks but sadly I am getting used to the idea of saying goodbye to booze for ever. I find it very interesting to see that many other people have a similar experience. By the way none of my meds mention adverse effects of alcohol in their prospectus.

Wow, what an interesting topic and certainly one I can relate to. After being on Mestinon for about 5 months, I started to get the blotchy's and difficulting breathing after having a wine but yet not all the time?? Sometimes this could happen when very weak or even after a meal without wine. This slowly got worse over the next few months and so I took pictures of the rash as it was getting quite severe and not itchy but my lips would go numb and breathing was quite a struggle. After chatting with my Neuro he sent me to a physician who specialised in determitology. After one look at the pictures and a consult he determine that I had an allergy to Mestinon !! Which was a mixture of good and bad news for me. Anyway after a couple more months of trial and error and a rush to the ER, it was declared that I have now developed an allergy to Sulphur and given that Mestinon is very much Sulphur based it aggrivated the sensitivity and was permanently removed from my medications. I still have bouts of blotchy's and breathing difficulties if I have a wine or processed food that has more presence of Sulphur but not to the same extent that I did on Mestinon. So I've come to know what wine brands work (usually the more expensive ones of course!!) and stick to these in moderation. I certainly miss not being able to have Mestinon to give me that boost but certainly don't miss the extent of blotchy's and breathing difficulites. I hope none of you have this same issue with Mestinon but the similarites in your posts were quite amazing to me. Take Care and good luck to all MGers Den

Hi, I absolutly agree with that the alcohol (and hot weather) provocates the symptoms in myasthenia gravis. The important and useful are in this disease see the foods and liquids ….. (1)pral-index (tissue pH buffer balance) (2)glichemian index The nerves „don’t like” the permanent aciditic areas in tissue or the large hypo- and hiperglichemian waves in myasthenia gravis. If somebody has worsens in myasthenia gravis after eating some foods, liquids which are contain more added sugar (alcohol) may see some bad effect in MG symptoms. May drink just the dry red wine (less sugar level) a little bit. Here a lot of MG peopples have same experinces. Look at for the pral-index in net, or in biological handbooks.
