Hi Karen,
Our daughter who was diagnosed with MG last June also had eyes that are very sensitive to light. Sunglasses do help. She also had eye dryness so it was hard to wear contact lenses at times. She doesnt have droopiness in her eyes... she had a problem where her eyes didnt close all the way! That made it rough when washing her hair and showering.. soap would get in the eyes... and when sleeping, we got her an eyemask to cover her eyes so they wouldnt dry out more.

Hi Karen,

I have only just been dx with MG since last week.Last November my optician thought my eye muscle problem was connected to anoher illness which I have,I also sufer from dry eyes.I was advised to get artificial tears from my GP(they are very soothing, called Gel tears) and also to wear sunglasses even on a dull day as the glare was really making my eye problems worse.I had already been wearing sunglasses but always wear them even when driving in the rain as they do help.

Take care

Hi, Karen-
Yes - besides droopy eyelids, I seem to be extremely sensitive to light and glare and often have great trouble keeping my eyes open while driving! Also, if I have been straining to open my eyes during the day, they are really tired and sore at the end of the day. Also, some days my eyes are normal for most of the day and other days they are not functioning properly at all.

It was my Optician that first alerted me to possible MG. I have worn contact lens successfully for over 30 years and suddenly was having severe problems with focusing, dryness and fatigue. I also have problems keeping my eyes open for driving the car.

Have you been checked for MS? Color confusion is one sign of MS.

My eyes are very sensitive to bright light.

I'm OK on sunny days with blue sky (not many of those in the UK this year...) but on grey but bright days, with loads of reflected light they're really uncomfortable.

Sunglasses really help. I have photo-sensitive prescription glasses, but they're not really big enough (modern fashion apparently) and they don't work in the car anyway.

I bought a big pair of sunglasses, from one of those catalogues that come with the Sunday papers, that are designed to fit over normal glasses. They have wide tinted arms and a lip at the top that just about touches my forehead, so very little external light can get in. They don't look very stylish but they make my eyes a lot more comfortable and are great for driving especially when I've got the roof down on my car (mid-life crisis sports car!).

I've also got a pair of large clip-on sunglasses as a backup.

Rob,

I never used to bother with sunglasses for many years, really didn't seem to need them.

However, since having MG i'd noticed my eyes being more sensitive to light + since I wear glasses anyway and hate having to change the things all the time I went with the reactive lenses a few years back.

Really has made a huge difference + no doubt in my mind that the MG has made my eyes less effective in responding to the bright lights.

I tend to think if MG is affecting your eye muscles then it is worth giving them all the help you can.

Now if only I could sort this long-sighted thing that is going on ... that one is no doubt down to age.

i also have light sensitivity often leading to migraines that last up to 4weeks at times along with this a feeling of pins being pushed through them.
The strain of having to force my eyes to focus and keeping my eyes open can feel like the muscle on the back of my eyes are on elastic bands and they have been over strectched doesnt happen that often but I do get quite a lot of pain.
