It is worth taking time to fill out the forms if you believe you meet the criteria. You have 6 weeks from receipt of form to return it so time to fill it out carefully - and benefit if/when paid is back dated to date of asking for form. The MGA has a booklet which is a good starting point. The website http://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/index.htm is excellent and the £16.50 annual subscription is well worth paying - especially if applying for the first time. Forms are changing next month so apply straight away for an application pack. Good luck.

Angeldust and Kelpie I've just sent off my completed form. I used the MGA booklet plus I have a friend who is a social worker and she went through the form with me before I filled it in. I've now had acknowledgements from them and have to wait for them to get the dr's report. But I've heard that so many people are turned down that I'm not particularly confident about getting it. I didn't know about the possibility of paying a subscription for help (thank you) and may consider that as I've now got to complete my Incapacity Benefit form and it's a job I keep putting off. I've found the whole thing very difficult to say the least. Good luck.

While I can understand reluctance to pay a sub of £16.50 to get advice about DLA and ICB forms, as this is less than one week's payment, I still feel it is excellent value for money. Many DWP applications get turned down because info which it is advisbale to include is not - and do remember you can only appeal on what is on the form, and not by introducing new statements/problems etc. DWP is likely to compare applications for DLA and ICB so consistency is really really important. I also know from expereince that very few social workers actually understand how to fill in the forms fully, so I personally would never rely on one (and yes I do have friends in that professional field) but talking to experts from CAB etc is valuable. Having 6 weeks to fill in a form does mean it doesn't have to be done in one go - I find it best to photocopy a blank form and fill it out in pencil until I am happy & then transfer the answers - finally taking a photocopy of my submission. The photocopies are really useful next time around - even though forms are somewhat altered! I don't mean to be unsympathetic - it is a slog - but if you are entitled to either or both DLA/ICB then this is the only way to receive it!

Hi everyone, Good news ... I've just been granted my disability living allowance and it's gone through in about three weeks from sending off the completed form! So don't give up ... that extra money could be very useful. Now I have to complete the form for Incapacity Benefit. I've been waiting for the SSP1 from my employer, but now have that. I also intend to fill in the form to apply for a blue badge now that I've got the DLA. At least maybe it might save energy to be able to do other things by having to walk less. If I can help anyone else, please let me know. Lizzie

Milya If you are entitled to a benefit then you should apply and I think the advice about going to your local Citizens Advice Bureau is great, they could probably advise you about your flat too. Any "business" is going to be difficult about giving money out so they are not going to throw it at you but also advice about photocopying form (I HATE FORMS!!) is good too! Keep trying. Liz

Forms for DLA change with effect from Monday 30th April. They look even more daunting than the current one, so I'd advise anyone thinking about applying or reapplying to do so before then. The forms can be downloaded and submitted electronically, or you can phone the number on the DWP website to have one posted out. Better the devil you know! Hope this helps those who are dithering.

i have just spent 18mths trying to get DLA i filled in the forms with my health visitor and got turned down i then appealed. Because of my sight problems complete eye lid cloursure and upper limb weakness or speak properly, i could not see and was refeared to the RNIB. In Jan this year after i was turned down my rehab officer put me in touch with RNIB office a gentleman came out to see me and filled in the forms it is not what you put in the forms but the way you word it ie: i said i did not need help to wash myself, but the RNIB explained to me that although i did not need help to wash i did need someone to purchase the items and put them in order in my bathroom you realy have to look and fill in the forms carefuly hope this helps
